Coweta County fosters academic excellence that prioritizes student advancement by providing innovative teaching and lifelong learning.

Coweta County Public School System

Coweta County School SystemThis is an exciting time to be a part of Coweta County, one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. The rapid growth of our community presents us with many unique challenges and opportunities in our school system.

The Coweta County School System – led by Superintendent Steve Barker– is comprised of 31 schools serving approximately 23,000 students. The Coweta County School System has a total of 19 elementary schools, 1 pre-K school, six middle schools, three high schools, 1 career-based charter school, and an alternative school.

The school system boasts three Georgia Teachers of the Year (more than any other state school system), and a National Middle School Principal of the Year. Several Coweta schools have been named state Reward Schools, Schools of Excellence and national Blue Ribbon schools.  Year after year, the county continues to surpass expectations and acheve new levels of success. Coweta County students' average overall SAT score was 1496 in 2014, above the State of Georgia's average of 1445. Coweta County students' consistently outperform their state counterparts of the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) and other academic indicators as well.

In addition to high ranking test scores, Coweta County schools are high performing.  Among the Coweta County schools honored for High Performance by the State of Georgia was Brooks Elementary (a Gold award winner).  Canongate Elementary, Arbor Springs Elementary and Northgate High School in 2011, and Jefferson Parkway Elementary, Arnall Middle and Evans Middle in 2012. Newnan High School received a silver medal national ranking in the U.S. News and World Report's 2013 Best High Schools report, placing the school in the top 8 percent of the nation's public, charter and magnet schools. Newnan High ranked 34th in the state of Georgia. With award-winning schools, National Merit and AP scholars, rich academic and extracurricular opportunities, and may other distinctions, its no wonder families choose Coweta for progressive education.

In Coweta County, students are exposed to the arts, athletics and other extracurricular activites that aid in personal development and offer students the chance to realize their interests. The school system's Centre for Performing and Visual Arts is a 40,000 square foot fine arts center that provides students a 1,000 seat state of the art performance hall, art gallery space, and meeting and rehearsal space, and provides students and the community with a center of accomplished artistic programs, performances and master classes with professional artists from outside the community.

Approximately 3,100 employees serve the Coweta County School System's student propulation.  Of these, 1,700 are certified employees (24% with 20-plus years experience, 65% with a Master's degree or higher) and 1,400 are classified employees (including school nurses, cafeteria, transportation, technology and others).

CEC Pyramid
Central Educational Center

Central Educational Center (CEC) is a partnership among local business, the Coweta County School System and West Georgia Technical College.  CEC was begun at the request of local business.  When business talked with local educational leaders about global economic changes and pressures, educational leaders responded with a new type of seamless partnership.  CEC’s mission is to “ensure a viable 21st century workforce.”

CEC is a “school of choice” that supplements the programming at East Coweta High School, Newnan High School and Northgate High School and is part of West Georgia Technical College programs.  At its core, CEC provides the opportunity for high school students to gain advanced technical education at a younger age, even allowing “dual enrollment” in West Georgia Technical College classes while in high school.  Because West Georgia Technical College provides significant programming, CEC also allows adults to improve skills and gain College-level certificates, diplomas and associate degrees that are “technically” focused.  CEC is built around needs defined by the business community.  While those needs include “higher levels of technical education and training”, business leaders overwhelmingly cited “work ethic” as the first need that should be addressed by the school.  CEC uses 10 traits identified by employers as most important in the development of a solid work ethic.  Those 10 traits include the following:

  1.  Attendance
  2. Character
  3. Teamwork
  4. Appearance
  5.  Attitude
  6.  Productivity
  7.  Organizational Skills
  8.  Communication
  9.  Cooperation
  10.  Respect

For the students who choose to attend CEC, including high school-age students, work ethic is taught, is reinforced and is graded.  Every student at CEC gets a work ethic grade or work ethic component to the grade.   A university researcher found that CEC high school age students significantly improved both their “attendance” and “on-time attendance” because they attended CEC.  CEC analyzes that work ethic grade before sending 400+ interns (annual number of paid and unpaid internships) to 200+ local business sites.

CEC has been visited by more than 500 organizations from most US states and 16 other nations, has been studied in Japanese educational literature, serves Georgia as the model for the state's charter College and Career Academy Initiative, and has been named a national model for high school educational reform.

West Georgia Technical College
West Georgia Technical College

West Georgia Technical College, a unit of the Technical College System of Georgia, is proud to be part of the Coweta County community.  The College has had a presence in Coweta County since 2000 through its partnership in the Central Educational Center, but through the support of community partners, the longtime dream of a full-service, stand-alone campus will soon be realized.

West Georgia Technical College is a state leader in technical and adult education.  Its over 7,200 credit students make West Georgia Tech the second largest technical college in Georgia.  Campuses in Carroll, Douglas, Haralson and Troup counties and additional class sites in Heard and Meriwether counties, offer more than 130 degree, diploma and certificate programs in addition to adult basic education and GED preparation courses.  Corporate Training and continuing Education departments offer a wide array of courses to business and industry and individuals who want short-term, targeted offerings.

The current Coweta Campus, on the site of CEC, offers programs that include dental assisting, automotive, welding, cosmetology, patient care, culinary arts and commercial truck driving.  Core courses are also offered.  Well-equiped, modern laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment enable students to train on industry-specific, real-world equipment.

The new Coweta Campus will be located on a 38-acre tract at the intersection of Interstate 85 and Turkey Creek Road, about 1.5 miles from CEC and near the future sites of Piedmont Newnan Hospital and Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA).  This property was generously donated by Orchard Hills Golf Properties.  Planning is underway for the construction of two buildings on this property, one funded through the private fund-raising efforts of the West Central Technical College Foundation and one funded through an appropriation of the state legislature.

Work is still being done to finalize program offerings for the new campus; however the community has identified healthcare as a primary need of area employers, including Piedmont Newnan and CTCA.  Consequently, the College plans to offer a variety of health-related programs such as registered nursing, patient care and medical assisting.  Other programs planned for the new campus include criminal justice, cosmetology and commercial truck driving.

Georgia's HOPE Scholarships and Grants and Federal Pell Grants, as well as several local scholarships, are available to students.  Admissions, financial aid and other personnel are available on each campus to make it easy for students to find the help they need.  Each campus also offers a full-service bookstore and a library.  College-wide even in troubled economic times, West Georgia has a 93 percent placement rate for graduates, a testament to the real-world job skills taught to students.

West Georgia Technical College provides the fuel that powers West Georgia's Economic Engine.
